http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=18&id=2117

We got lucky and we have a first round bye. That means that our captain
meeting isnt till 10. So to make sure we get there on time and time to
warm up i say we meet at the school around 7:30. Mapquest says it takes
two hours so this should get us there around 9:30. Captains meeting at 10
and our first game at 10:30.

Leading up to Auburn

Everyone should be aware that we've got a tournament this coming weekend. It's our second (and last) tournament this semester. It should be a great chance for our rookies to get a taste of what life is like on Pure Bliss, and see the level at which we all will be expected to compete. As far as I know, we don't have a schedule, or a list of teams attending, but we'll get that out as soon as we get it. Last I heard we had 8 for the tournament. That's not great, but all you need is 7.

This week is going to be a little different. First off, tonight it's going to be too wet to play outside, so you're going to have to practice indoors. You can try and get the gym, but I'd suggest going to the pool and do your standard pool practice. Do the following plyos in the pool:

A Skips w/Vertical (3x15m): Skip using ‘A’ Form. Bring your knee up and forward to be parallel with the ground, keep your foot flexed (toe towards shin). Push off of the ball of your foot; don’t let your heel hit the ground. Try to get as high as possible. Improves running form, builds lower leg strength.

1 Leg Lateral Hops (3x10/leg): Stand on one leg and hop back and forth. Try to increase the distance you hop while still hopping back as soon as you land. Builds lateral leg strength.

Ankle Hops (3x15): Stand with knees slightly bent. Jump straight up using only your ankles. Do not swing arms and try not to use your quads. Builds lower leg strength.

Diagonal Lunges (3x10/leg): Step out with right leg at a 45 degree angle. Keep left leg straight and bend right knee, but not past your toe. Hold for two seconds then bring left leg forward and step out with left leg at a 45 degree angle from right left. Repeat. Builds lower body strength.

and just for fun...
Standing Broad Jump (3x5): From a standstill with feet shoulder-width apart, bend at waist and knees and jump forward. Use arm swing to improve distance. Land with bent knees to absorb shock. Builds lower body explosiveness and jumping form.

Tuesday we're hosting a pickup scrimmage again. I will probably be late, and may not make it at all as I have a SPSU orientation to attend. Don't forget your burpees. After the scrimmage we've got a new interval workout. We're doing 5 sets of 60 seconds running, 50 seconds resting. We should be running faster than we were for the 90s. Run as fast as you can maintain for 60 seconds.

Thursday we've got a scrimmage versus Kennesaw, presumably at our place. If we win, no running, otherwise we're doing the 60 second intervals again.

We're going to continue working on the same things this week. They're our basics. Man defense, straight stack offense, breaking the mark, making break mark (and swing!) cuts.

High Release Backhands - How I hate thee

Let me count the ways. Check out this article. Perhaps I should institute sprints for high releases again...

Be Thankful this week

I hate to break it to everyone, but it's still going to be raining tonight. It's probably going to be raining tomorrow night. You all can do whatever you want tonight, practice in the gym, go eat sushi, whatever. I'm cancelling the pickup scrimmage tomorrow night. We're not going to have enough PB'ers there and there won't be many pickups either. Obviously we won't be scrimmaging KSU Thursday either. So, you've more or less got this week off. However, you really should try to do 2 (or 3) 4x90 intervals this week. I'm going to the gym today to do them on the stairmaster...ouch.

Auburn is just around the corner and we don't have a big roster going (surprise). Everyone is going to need to be in shape. Next week we'll review what we've learned so far and go over some stuff for Auburn. I'm going to try and make it out next Monday to run some drills.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Week 11/14

Losses to Kennesaw in back to back weeks ain't gonna cut it guys. Also, we only had 4 people at practice on Tuesday. So, we've changed the schedule slightly in an effort to get more involvement and still improve. Mondays will remain pretty much the same. I understand that attendance has waned a bit though. I still can't make Mondays unfortunately, so you guys are free to do what you want, play hotbox, or run drills, I don't care. Thursday we'll still be scrimmaging Kennesaw. Tuesdays, we'll be scrimmaging a team of pickup players so we need to start getting at least 7 out on Tuesdays.Every week we'll have a point or two to focus on. I'll go over it here, we'll discuss it on Tuesdays before the scrimmage, and we'll try to keep it in mind for the scrimmages. This week we're going to work on two things: man defense and breaking the mark on offense.

Man Defense

Get the EDGe.

E-stablish Position:

  • How far from player?
  • Closer if around disc, otherwise a few steps off.
  • Triangulate - See the disc and your man.

D-ictate:

  • Decide which way to force them and do it.
  • Either with your body, or by giving a buffer.
  • Don’t let them run by you, get your body in the way, dictate the entire cut.
G-o get the block:
  • That last oomph to go get it.
  • Layout!
Breaking the Mark

Handlers – work on your breakmark throws in the game. Throw your invert flicks and around backhands. I don’t care if we are turning it over. Pay attention to what cuts are easy to throw to, when you need to be releasing the disc for timing, etc. Pivot, extend, and if you get fouled, throw the disc and call the foul.

Receivers – make breakmark cuts. Pay attention to what cuts work best and when you should be timing your cuts. When you get the disc, look immediately downfield, someone else should be continuing for you on the breakside. This is one of the easiest throws in Ultimate, make sure you throw it quickly if someone is open.

That’s it for this week. We’ll probably have to work on these for more weeks in the future, but let’s really focus on these things this week.
